What is a Steel Fabrication?
Steel fabrication is the ironworks process where we cut, bend, and shape steel alloy to create products for our customers. It involves taking pieces of metal and attaching them to form a predefined size and shape. The process requires skilled service technicians who take raw components and transform them into marketable projects.
There is not much room for error. Fabrication is used in creating things that range from household appliances to vehicular parts. Machinist gauge the shape of raw material in the form of pipes, pre-shaped channels, sheet metal, and other forms.
The appropriate metal fabrication process is completed with applicable heat, pressure, and electricity. A large portion of the labor-intensive and hot work is accomplished through an approach of cutting and welding raw materials. A fraction of the work uses a more efficient and faster electric arc furnace.
Both processes involve melting down the metal with the use of very high temperatures. When the structural steel is processed, our Sacramento steel fabricators determine the shape. Two factors govern the outcome – the equipment and the software package used.
We at Extreme Industrial Coatings prefer the use of cutting-edge technology to operate and maintain the process proficiency. Of equal importance is the equipment. We rely on laser steel-cutting devices to acquire smooth edges for superior accuracy. Processes like painting, sandblasting, and galvanizing may also be used. The labor result is seen in the form of decorative motifs, cutwork grills, and sturdy steel frames with numerous industrial and commercial applications.
Steel Fabrication Techniques
The most used technique in fabrication work is welding. It is the process that fuses two pieces of metal, such as stainless steel, via joints that create new objects. Other processes used are punching, blanking, and shearing. Other objects are shaped using machining.
Shearing is a process that trims and removes unwanted stainless steel. It is performed by using a blade-affixed tool or machine to slice through the sheet metal. The punching process forces a punch into a die that removes a part from the larger metal sheet or strip. The scrap drops from the die and is typically collected for recycling.
Blanking punches specific shapes from strips or sheets of raw material. The punched-out pieces are called ‘blanks.’ It is often made with hardened carbide of steel tools that work on metals such as stainless steel, structural steel, aluminum, and plastic.
The process is cost-effective and quick. High-quality tools are used to correct cracks or burrs on the edges. Machining involves a variety of methods where pieces of raw materials are cut into desired sizes and shapes by a controlled material removal process.
