When they are finished that have a great looking garage they can be proud to show off to all their friends. However, the garage floor is almost always neglected. What is Garage Floor Epoxy?
Garage floor epoxy is widely used but many people find the stuff too hard to mix and apply. Hiring someone to apply the epoxy garage floor coating is highly recommended if you do not want to deal with the preparation and application of the product. Once the epoxy is applied it must be given enough time to completely dry. Some products come with plastic beads or pebbles that should be sprinkled immediately after the epoxy is applied to the floors. The plastic beads dry onto the surface, creating a texture that is less slippery especially when wet. Sand can also be applied but it does wear off in time.
Epoxy is an incredibly durable substance that will bond with your garage’s concrete floor. Think about the last time you went to a Fresno car dealership’s showroom floor. It was probably very shiny and colorful, maybe with multi-colored chips used for decoration. This is what your floor should look like after you apply this resilient coating to your Fresno garage epoxy floors.
Since it actually bonds with the surface, it will be a permanent coating for your garage. Unlike most traditional floor coverings, there is no space between the epoxy and the concrete. Here it is all one unit. Since there is not any space between the floor and the coating your concrete will be well protected.
There will be no more moisture affecting the concrete, no more concrete wearing away. and no pesky pet or oil stains on the floor. Cleaning will be as simple as wiping a paper towel across your kitchen countertop.
The epoxy will be a two-part solution that will need to be mixed together and applied based on the manufacturer’s instructions. Mixing the two parts together will start a chemical reaction that will harden the mixture fairly quickly. A top coat should also be applied for extra protection and added shine.
Benefits of Garage Epoxy Floors
There are many different benefits to applying garage floor epoxy, both functional and aesthetic. The epoxy will provide a waterproof barrier to the surface that will make it extremely easy to clean. It will be resistant to oil that may leak from your cars, and dirt and other debris can easily be swept away. Anyone who has tried to sweep a normal concrete garage floor knows that this is a futile task. Not only will this easy maintenance make your life a whole lot easier, especially if you spend any significant time working there, but it will also extend the life of your garage floor surface.

It is very rare that a buyer will see this type of improvement in a garage, and you can be sure they will pay extra money to make it theirs. This simple job can add some real value to your home, and can even be looked at as an investment in its value.
Prep Work and Applying the Epoxy
The first thing that will need to be done before applying your garage floor epoxy, is going to be the prep work. Actually applying the epoxy is going to be a pretty easy job, but it will not come out well if we do not complete this step. Many people will take shortcuts in the prep work stage, and those people are usually the ones who are disappointed with the final outcome. A few extra hours here will mean years of enjoying your garage floor. We will do a complete and thorough prep job for your epoxy floors.
First, we need to sweep and clean all dirt and dust off of the floor. We will also want to tape off areas where we do not want the epoxy to go. Next, we will apply an etching solution to the floor. This will allow the epoxy to bond to the floor and it will remove stains from the floor as well. We may need to do this more than once in some areas depending on the level of stain encountered. We will use a bristle broom and a watering can for this step.
Next, we’ll mix the epoxy according to the instructions on the cans. We will let it sit for as long as the manufacturer’s instructions say. After it has sat, it will need to be used and applied fairly quickly. If it not applied in a timely fashion, the epoxy will not bond properly to the garage floor and will create a mess. We will then add the color flakes to the still wet epoxy. Then we will prepare the clear top coat to be put onto the garage floor.
After this is all done, we will need to wait however long the instructions tell us before parking vehicles on the floor. This time may be even longer if it is high humidity.
Things To Consider When Purchasing Epoxy Garage Floor Coating
There are a few things that you need to think about when you are purchasing garage epoxy flooring. First of all, you will want to get a mixture that you can apply right after mixing. Some products require you to mix it up and then set it aside before you apply it to the floor. This is called induction time and it is sometimes a sign of a weaker mixture. A quality epoxy floor coating for garage floors should be able to protect your floor for the next 10 years. We only use the highest quality epoxy!
The next thing you should do is make sure that you are using a brand that will not deteriorate. There are some brands that tend to develop a yellowish tinge over time. Even though this will not interfere with the epoxy garage floor coating’s ability to protect your floor, it sure will look unsightly.
